Teaching Philosophy

The teaching philosophy at SJI is a Second Language Approach. This approach allows the student to learn ASL using their native language English to understand the grammar, syntax and language principles of ASL. It is important that the students have a clear idea of what they are signing. Thus, our teachers give explanations followed by meaningful opportunities to practice. Memorization or imitation without some level of understanding is simply not an effective strategy to use with adults.

It is important for the teacher to provide clear, concise explanations of the rules and predictable patterns of ASL in order to assist the adult learner in assimilating the appropriate rules.

SJI is proud of it’s teachers and students and together we will continue to bridge both the hearing and deaf communities through American Sign Language.
